After five happy years with my S3 I had finally decided to make the jump to a turbo. The S3 had been a superb car and the realisation of a childhood dream. I had spent so much on it that it was very hard to let it go. I originally was looking for another G-car and possibly an HC turbo if I could find a good one, but I had this nagging doubt in my mind:I had bought the S3 as a ‘First Esprit’, intending to get a turbo in a couple of years. Truth is, that after spending big bucks on the engine & ’box, I kept her for 5 years to get the mileage out of the work. I had a good think this time as to whether I was already looking towards the ‘next one’ when buying this one…

So, I decided on the SE.
The reason I chose this model and not a later one is (if I’m honest) cost. If I could afford an S4s I’d get one.I wanted the chargecooled engine and the SE is the first model to get it. By getting this engine spec I was getting an engine very close to the one that went in the last 4cyl Esprits to be made, so it was a car I was happy to keep for many years. Another reason I chose the SE is that I do in my heart prefer the G-car, and if I was changing shape than I wanted a huge increase in performance and spec.
The Search
The SE cost me over twice what I sold my S3 for. This meant I had to have a few months without an Esprit to work overtime and save the difference (was surprised how much I could save when I did not own a Lotus!). When I was ready to start shopping I quickly found there are a lot of bad (no, that’s too strong a word, make it ‘needy’) Esprits about. I saw cars described as ‘immaculate’ that were anything but. I saw cars advertised as SE, but they were non-chargecooled models. I had honest owners describe every crack and mark only to find the car was loads better than they made it sound. You simply have to see them sometimes. Five years previous ownership did not equip me enough to spot a bad one though, and expert inspection (absolute must) both proved me wrong about cars I thought to be good and saved me money.

My SE
After sniffing round several cars I bought my SE. It is an ’89 car with only 48k miles and 3 owners when I bought it. I made a 400 mile round trip to view it the day after it went on sale. It was inspected in the week and I made the same trip to collect the next Saturday.
The inspection found a leaking shock, seized brake calliper, missing manifold stud and intermittent check light. On top of that, the ‘C’ service was well overdue. I still bought the car though as these faults were nothing compared to other cars I’d looked at.

I had wisely decided to leave at least £2,000 left out of my budget for any work needed. This is the best advice I could give any Esprit owner (£2k is nothing to spend on any Esprit the owner decided to sell).

So after a 6 month search I had an Esprit again. All the while I was shopping for one, other owners were kind enough to give me lifts to various meets. Now I was able to get there under my own steam!

Strange how I always find another White for company…

Comparisons between the two models
Rather than an ‘updated’ model, I see the SE as a different car to my S3. I could show off the S3’s handling on the winding Cotswold roads where I live, and she was much more at home in this environment with motorways being less fun. To really show off the SE’s thrust a dual carriageway is a must, and trips up and down the motorway become much looked forward to rushes of turbo boosted acceleration. The S3, with its normally aspirated carbed engine, did feel much lighter and felt more ‘chuckable’ into corners with its smooth power delivery. The SE is just as capable, but when going into corners at revs you have to be ready for the extra power that the turbo will give – and be aware it could snap out! I think if ever I could afford it, I would be more likely to buy another early N/A esprit G-car and have both, than to sell mine and get a newer one.
Mods so far:
Carbon fibre roof panel
The main reason for this was because I have a real low heat-threshold, and the glass roof was simply cooking me!
The weight saving will do no harm though, and it’s easier to remove and store than a heavy and fragile sheet of glass. The weave of the CF is gorgeous too.Steering Wheel
The leather had faded to a nasty brown. I decided to refinish the leather and to fit a removable boss to allow easier access into car when parked in the garage. The re-dying of the wheel makes it as good as new
Side Indicators
The ones Lotus sourced are huge. I got these LED units for £20 GBP. As they are flat backed, no bodywork is required – and they cover the old units’ fixing holes

Also got some new Original pattern mats from SJ sports carsUpdates done early 2005
CHARGECOOLER PUMP
I found that I was losing coolant from the chargecooler tank, whenever I had lost some coolant I had traces of Emulsified water on the oil dipstick. With this in mind I decided to get an electric chargecooler pump fitted. The unit I used was this one:And PNM engineering made the blanking plug for the old pump position.

Steve Williams fitted the pump for me, and I then took the old one apart to see what kind of condition it was in. I found the impeller had lost all it’s blades, and that the bits of blade had actually blocked the outlet in the pump Housing.

I also found traces of water-oil emulsification in the shaft of the pump, so it appears I was correct in my diagnosis of the coolant loss. But more importantly this action showed that my chargecooler system was not working!
With the Electric unit now fitted, my chargecooler is COLD. Not just cooler than everything else in the engine bay, but genuinely very cold! The car goes a lot better too now, and now I know just how cold the CC should Be, I’ll never let my SE limp around with a defective one again, after all, we are are talking about 30-40 bhp extra…
NEW EXHAUST AND DE-CAT
I got a new manifold fitted, and at the same time decided to remove the catalyst and fit a sports exhaust. I found that as my SE was a left exit tail pipe, my choice of boxes was limited. So I bought a Right hand exit rear valance and got it sprayed. The de-cat pipe I have fitted is by SJ sportscars, as is the exhaust. This has a small box but no silencer. It is a ‘bit’ anti social when I’m leaving home early morning on the way to meets, but hey! I live practically on the end of the runway of our local RAF base, so the neigbours are used to some noise.
Hard to tell if there is a performance advantage but I think there is. It sounds great on the road and there Is lovely popping on overrun, and some impressive fire on liftoff and gearchanges. The car sounds a lot more Raw and menacing than it did before, and make noises that I missed since selling my carbed Esprit. :o)
BINNACLE REMOVAL & DASH CHANGE

My original wood dash was cracked and faded. I have Never liked the wood in the Esprit and was lucky enough to be offered a black dash set for my car. It’s a matter of Personal taste I guess, but I think it looks much better.

CODE 26 FAULT
I had an intermittent engine check light. If I stopped the engine and restarted it then it could go away for days, I lived with this for a bit, but got fustrated when it came on while I was on the motorway robbing my boost until I could stop and reset it. The list of items on the code 26 list are:
- RPM relay
- Radiator relay
- A/C control relay
- engine overheat relay
- solenoid relay (throttle jack)
- ebpv solenoid
- wastegate solenoid
- canister purge solenoid
- check engine light bulb
- secondary injector circuitAs the cause for 26 is so wide, any search will find a fair bit of conjecture and you could find ten different people with ten different causes. I fiddled about blindly until freescan split the list in half, and then i focused on the items on that list.
Everyone with a chargecooled Esprit should use freescan Before posting about fault codes. The LEW lead and manual is one of the best things I have bought and without it you have only the guesswork of others to go by, which will cost you time better spent driving! Freescan split the code culprits into two groups and identified the places i should be looking: Secondary injector relay, fan relay, cannister solenoid and wastegate solenoid. It also said in the 'tip' line that something was probably open circuit.
I decided to blitz the fault rather than do individual components and wires. This is because as the fault is intermittant, if i did one single item at a time and then ran til the fault came - it could take ages as sods law dictates i would change the faulty item last. I phoned SJ and bought the Secondary injector relay, fan relay, and wastegate solenoid. This only came to about £40, i did not get the cannister solenoid (this comes as a complete assembly for about £60) the cost did not prevent me buying it, but as it requires (fairly easy) removal of the boot floor i thought i'd try the others first.
At the same time as changing these, i pulled every plug on the fault code (whether on my split or not) and cleaned the pins, and made tight any plug contacts that looked like they could be tighter. This action cured the fault and I have not seen it since. So i can't nail any individual culprit, but £40 and an hours time is worth a shot to get your boost back.
SAT NAV & SPEED CAMERA LOCATIONS
I installed a TomTom go sat nav system and downloaded All the uk speed camera locations. This gives me warnings of Gatso, Specs, Red light, temp, and Mobile Camera locations. A highly recommended bit of kit:

Am very happy with my SE. I find the whole UK Esprit community a great bunch of people, and the many meets are great fun.
After years of admiring the Esprit, ownership will never fail to please and reward.

This is how it started for many owners. I had this game for my computer in 1985. I am so lucky I am able to make it for real.
My first Esprit.
I see this car at shows still. The new owner is making her all his own. She went to a good home and I will no doubt watch her get better and better…
